History of the Nansen Passport – UNHCR’s first refugee passport

The Nansen Passport was established after World War I by the League of Nations to give the millions of war refugees official recognition and a chance at a new life.

It is the predecessor of the current UNHCR passport that people currently receive when they arrive at a refugee camp.

The passport is named after Fridtjof Nansen, the first High Commissioner for Refugees.
